Grafting Apples

Ok, first off, I'd like to say i'm sorry if I seem as clueless as possible when it comes to growing fruit trees...but I am :/

I want to grow some of the Red Delicious apples like you can buy at a store (not sure if they go by a different name).

If there is anyone who could give me instructions on how to properly graft an apple tree PLEASE let me know. It will be greatly appreciated.

Some things I need to know are:

What makes a good rootstock?

Where can I get a good bud to graft into the plant?

What type of graft should I do?

Does it matter how old the tree is that the buds come from as long as it's a fresh branch?

...and anything else that would tell me how to successfully graft an apple tree. I have been wanting to do this for the last couple of months but hadn't gotten the time.

There are many excellent books at the local library with pictures/steps/etc.....

Since you are starting your fruit growing from "scratch" I can recommend a book dedicated to gardeners like you. However you will need to find the time to read it. Someday there may be a shot we could take labled "knowledge" or maybe "experience". I will be first in line. Until then "The Home Orchard" a book by Chuck Ingels a University of California Extension farm advisor should answer your questions as they arise. Al

Since you have internet service just google 'grafting' and you'll fine all sorts of information on different grafting methods. I found a lot of useful information this way.

Here in TN they offer a class on grafting, I have signed up for it! Just call or visit your county ext office and see if they do the same in your area. Here it will be on March 19th morning and evening classes. For $20.00 you get 7 apple, peach, or pear rootstock whatever you want and the class, everything is provided. So yes, being able to walk away with the trees is worth it not counting the class!

Many of your questions are answered in the Fruit and Orchards Forum. You can use the search functions of Gardenweb to locate a lot of the information. You may actually find more information than you really want. Many people are a little overwhelmed by how much can go into fruit growing decisions that may seem simple on the surface. You'll also find that there may not be a firm answer to all of your questions because there are just so many variables.

Google "buy apple scion wood" to find bud sticks to graft. Also see www.nafex.org/supply_source.htm You may wish to join NAFEX. They have a fantastic lending library and a great magazine. Also Google "buy apple rootstock". I have had good luck in the past with www.raintreenursery.com/ Good luck on your journey. I have no financial interest in any of these organizations.
