Mistake on grape cuttings--help!

I took grape cuttings in February and put them under a plastic tent. I thought only one had rooted--(I saw a leaf forming) but when I upended the pot they had all formed large masses of white roots. I was so excited until I discovered that there were no buds above the soil on 5 of the six cuttings.

I'm new at propagation and had very little cutting wood left on my vine, so just hacked a few pieces off and put in soil. On most of the cuttings, there is only one bud under the soil, just above where it rooted, but no buds above the soil.

Will the underground roots send up a shoot?

Your experience is not unusual. Your cuttings have the ability to produce buds where there were none. These are called adventitious buds. Just go ahead and pot up your cuttings as they are. Al

I'm interested in this topic because I took cuttings of my own vines this February, wrapped them in a damp towel, and stuck them in the refrigerator so they would think it is winter still, and not dry out. You just stuck yours in dirt? Very cool!

I was saving mine just in case my order from UC Davis did not get filled, but I got word they have shipped Fed EX, and today is the day for a bunch of cuttings. I ordered HOT weather varietals, and am so looking forward to one in particular (from Santorini, Greece--Asyrtico), but I also ordered figs, olives, and pomegranates.
