Sue there are lots of previous threads on this forum about this topic. You might want to do a search to pull up all the info. There are issues with rooting in still water (as you will see), but, for some plants, it's an easy way to start.

Dark colored containers are actually recommended (cuts down on algae growing in your water and can increase rooting) as long as the leaves receive light.

I start many cuttings in water. I prefer opaque glass but have used clear glass for the faster rooting plants. I also add nutrients like Superthrive or Thrive Alive w/B-1 to the water. They both contain B-1 which I've found to be helpful with root development. Many varieties also benefit from the addition of bottom heat.
