Rooting in water

I was wondering if anyone had ever run across information on different methods of starting perennials (etc) in water. Every time I see someone rooting a cutting in water, they are doing it in a clear container, like a jelly jar. What about starting them in opaque or wrapped jars that don't admit light through the sides?*

Are additives ever used for this method? If so, what?

Are rooting hormones ever used? The only one I have is RootTone, and it doesn't seem to mix with water very well, the one time I tried it.

* I acquired a few opaque black plastic containers that I was told were for hydroponics, which is the source of my question.

Any thoughts would be welcome.
