Help with Ponytail Palm

hortster

Here in KS my ponytail palm, Beaucarnea recurvata, is outside in the summer and inside in the winter. I have a great indoor exposure for it during the winter although this year it has maxed out and next winter the top will be growing in totally reflected light as opposed to the direct sun through the large southwest window. It has reached a size that no longer works. I am contemplating air layering it this summer but would love some direction from others that have done this. I do understand and have done air layering, but is it effective if the top to be air layered is four or five feet tall after the top is cut and the trunk at that area is 4" in diameter? Am I looking at more than one season of air layering and a huge trunk wrap? Advice, please! and thanks in advance. This baby is almost 20 years old and I don't want to screw it up.
