crabapple scion

I just attended my first scionwood exchange. I really hadn't intended to bring anything home except the seeds they also offer, but you know what happened, I'm sure.
Someone had a red leaved crabapple that they highly recommended. However, it is not just a straight shoot like the other scions. it is about 3' long and has 6 8-10" branches. It's like a miniature tree in itself. Reading up on scionwood, it says to keep the pieces in a gallon bag in the fridge. Well, obviously this won't work with this. Should I cut this one piece I got into smaller pieces?
Thanks,
Martha
