does anyone use rooting medium

I was under the impression that you could just use some rooting hormone and place the clipping in the ground or a pot of typical soil but on gardening shows they always use some sort of white rocky stuff in a pot

what really works?

I use a mix of 80% perlite to 20% peat for starting cuttings. The object is to have a lot of oxygen and a little moisture in the root zone. Plants vary a lot in how easy they form roots on cuttings and I try and satisfy the needs of the difficult ones. Al
