Selective Breeding

Selective breeding is the reason why our fruits and vegetables have become what they are today. But can selective breeding occur in the wild as will as on the farm? Can a single plant species form other varieties of itself if isolated in different sections of a city. Also how would you go about the creation of your own plant variety via selective breeding. Is it all about plant numbers and eye sight and growing generation after generation. If anyone could give me more info on changing plants traits and characteristics I'd be extremely thankful. Thanks to whoever took the time to read this too.
