black tips on willow leaves

Greetings,

I took numerous hardwood cutting of hakuro nishiki willow, put them in water for a few days till roots just started, then potted them up, placed in a shallow tray with a bit of water, and put them under my seed grow lights. In a few weeks, they had big roots, and many leaves.

Then many started getting black tips on the ends of the leaves.

Is this fungal/disease? Or insufficient roots for the top growth? Soil too wet?

Solutions? Most still seem alive, just sporting a goth look!

Ps-everything was at room temperature, without a plastic cover.

couple of thoughts...

i would have tented them for increased humidity ... they may have sacrificed leaf for root growth ....

second.. maybe you started a bit too soon ... you are stuck with them indoors for a long time in z5 with last frost in late may ...

if you have them in multiple pots... try 'hardening off' some of them in the garage... the cooler temps ... if properly hardened... will put them into slow motion for a few weeks as it warms outside ...

third ... if the source is still available ... start a few more.. everything the same.. but put the pot into a gallon plastic bag ... they dont have to be more than a few inches tall if size of bag is the issue .... if you started with long sticks.. that might be another problem .... and just start teh new batch in the garage ... they will root much slower.. but it will be a failsafe if the others fail ...
