crabapple rootstock question

Hey all,

I posted this over on the trees forum and thought I'd ask y'all as well.

There is a really nice flowering crabapple tree locally that I fell in love with. It flowers heavily every year and is on the larger side when it comes to crabapples - about 15' tall w/equal spread, and 8" trunk diameter at its base. I have no clue what variety it is (not labeled) and no one I've asked knows the cultivar ID. So, I've decided to chip-bud it onto some root stock. I've bought a potted Malus sargentii seedling for this purpose because I read this species is relatively disease free. However, I recently read that this is a smaller growing species. I'm worried that if I chip bud my mystery crabapple onto M. sargentii, it will overgrow the rootstock or will be dwarfed by a smaller/slower growing rootstock. My question: would you recommend I go ahead and chip bud onto M. sargentii or is there a better/more appropriate Malus rootstock species for my larger growing mystery crabapple? Thanks for your advice/help!
