For a class I propagated Teucrium fruticans (Bush Germander). I did three flats and each one had different media. My 1:1 peat moss & perlite did best. My 1:9 peat & perlite did the worst. Of course I have to write about my thoughts on why the 1:9 mix didn't do as good. The only thing that I can think of is that there is less nutrients which caused slow new growth. But I can't think of anything else? Why wouldn't as many root in the 1:9 mix than in the 1:1? One more thing...does perlite hold too much water which could've had a bad effect on the rooting of the cuttings? Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you for your time!

Perlite is exploded volanic rock which does not hold of any or the three types of soil water. Perlite provides the coarse material to artifical soils which means it produces air spaces in the media. The 1:9 midia had lots of air spaces but not all that much water holding material, the peat. Cuts need to be in direct contact with water in order to survive and produce roots.

Unless you adjusted the watering schedule for these two mixes, the latter would have been very dry when the former was perfect. It takes a bit of practice to balance water needs, porosity, etc.
