echeveria leaf rooted, now what?

Happy weekend folks!

I have an echeveria leaf that I have been successful in creating some new roots with. I am super excited about this, as it is the first success I have had with a succulent leaf rooting. I think I have been keeping soil too moist in the past. The soil this leaf has been kept in stays pretty dry. I'm not even sure if I have watered the soil at all that it has been in. Now that I have these lovely roots starting, I would hate to rot them by watering them if they don't need it. '

Does anyone have any advice on how long I should keep the soil as it is or when I should give these guys some water? The leaf cutting has been getting lots of sun. I don't want to change what is working, but I figure these roots will need some water at some point.

Any advice from experience would be greatly appreciated. Enjoy your weekend!

Just push it gently into some sandy compost and wait. In about a year's time you will have a recognizable plant! The only thing you can do wrong with these guys is overwater. Stem cuttings are quicker.

I've seemed to not have success from watering. I'll let it stay fairly dry. I don't know much about stem cuttings. Any direction towards threads one here about stem cuttings?

Stem cuttings are when you cut off an entire stem, as opposed to just a single leaf. It's a good way of dealing with older plants that become untidy. Leave it completely dry for about 24 hrs to callus over, which reduces the chance of rot, then simply push the stem into the compost. I don't water this for about a week, as the rooting process will start without it. The advantage is you have a much larger plant to start with, don't have a shrivelling leaf to contend with and so don't have to wait so long for it to look good. The method is good for most stem-forming succulents. Good luck. - Ian.
