When is the best time to take lilac cuttings????

I've read so many different suggestions on the best time to take cuttings between early spring to late summer but who is right. I live in zone 5, but real close to zone 4. Has anyone out there had success with lilac cuttings? and when did you take them and what type of cuttings worked for you? What type of medium was used? and What method?? I thank you in advance for your help.

I have never had any luck with lilac cuttings. I have been able to cut rooted suckers from old plants, to make more plants. Al
