Lavender not doing well after putting in ground

I had 3 english lavenders in pots, and Im ashamed to admit they were still in the plastic pots purchased in. (for 6 months) I didnt know where to put them because they dont like too much water, I recently put them in the ground with some compost and a little diluted miracle grow liquid. Anyway they are not doing well they look like they are slowly drying out. They are getting water, I also put in some other plants and they are thriving but the lavender seems to be dying, they seemed to be doing better in the plastic pots than in the ground. I know they like well drained soil, is this the problem are they getting too much water? I water them every other day because theres strawberries in that planter. Im beginning to think they thrive on neglect. I live outside the Monterey bay area of CA so it hasnt been too warm to plant, why are they not doing as well as in the pots?

this should be in the perennial forum.. rather than the propagation forum ...

there is a wider audience of peeps there ...

otherwise.. post where you wish ..

that said.. you water when they need water.. not by some schedule.. insert finger.. and do not water again.. until the soil dries.. or gets hot [it will be dry tomorrow] ...

and NEVER fertilize a stressed plant.. and a transplant.. is stressed by definition.. perhaps you burned the disturbed roots ..

and yes.. having divergent plants in on pot.. can cause watering issues ...

you said: Im beginning to think they thrive on neglect.

===>>> yes.. that is another way of saying.. you might be killing them with too much love ...

I wonder if you loosened up the roots when you took them out of the pots? I think if you dig one up, you might find they have never grown out of the compact root as it was in the pot. Lavender transplants well and is almost a native in your Mediterranean climate. Al
