Hi there. Why do you consider your questions dumb?

Generally astilbes are divided in the fall or at least when they're not blooming. You could take a chance if you can keep the plant moist and shaded. I can't remember how astilbes look at the base; you'll either have to tug or pry them apart, or perhaps you'll need to cut them carefully.

As for the hosta, take a look and make sure there's more than one plant in the pot. Then yes, you could divide them now. One thing about hostas though is that the pretty effect they make in that pot has to do with the leaves filling in all available spaces. Once it's divided it could look kind of lopsided for the season. But it can be done.
