Cedar Tree cutting

I have rooted a cedar tree branch in water this year. It is thriving in the water, good root growth, and new green growth is healthy. Does anyone know if it will continue in water well, or must it go back into dirt? I know some plants grow ok in water, but some do not. This cutting is doing well now, but does anyone know for certain what will happen if it stays in the water?

Yes it will have to go into dirt eventually.
