contorted filbert tree

Hi! I have had my contorted filbert tree for 6 years-the main tree died over the winter but it still has lots of new shoots growing out from the bottom. I would like to grow a new plant should I cut down the dead tree? Will the new growth be contorted too? Thanks for your help! Robin

RE: contorted filbert tree

CHECK AT OR NEAR THE SOIL LINE... IS THERE A SWOLEN AREA IF SO INDICATES THE PLANT WAS GRAFTED.... THEN IF THE SHOOTS ARE ABOVE THE GRAFT WILL HAVE A CONTORTEN FORM (CULTIVAR) IF BELOW GRAFT WILL GROW A "NORMAL" FILBERT. iF NO GRAFT THE PLANT GROWING ON OWN ROOTS & SHOULD GIVE A CONTORTED FORM
