Transplanting LARGE Elderberry

ElizabethN

We moved to a house in central/eastern Washington State last Fall, and inherited some overcrowded "landscaping" in slightly raised beds. There is an absolutely gorgeous Elderberry with very dark leaves... planted less than 3' from the house, in front of a window.

It's got to go, so I'll be digging it out no matter what I do next. I like everything about it expect its location, so I want to try to move it to a new location further from the house. Internet searches on transplanting elderberry tell me to cut it back when I move it; is this really a good idea? It would make the plant easier to move, but I'm sure to damage/reduce the root system while digging it out, so I'm concerned that it may need all the leaves it can keep.

Any advice appreciated, other than "throw it out and plant a new one" -- that's my fallback position if the transplant doesn't take, but I'd like to at least try.
