trying to save my aralia (indoors)

My aralia elegantissima was infested with scale. I cut all the stems back to just about 3 to 5 inches, removed all the old soil (lost some of the roots in the process), and repotted with fresh soil.
So I'm wondering if I should cover it with plastic to seal in the humidity as if I were trying to propagate a plant from a stem cutting? Any thoughts?

Sounds to me like you are trying to kill the poor thing, but you may want to post this in the House Plants Forum for more specific advice. This isn't really a propagation issue.
