Japanese Maple questions

I have a very old JM tree, and around March/April of this year, noticed tiny seedlings were everywhere underneath it. Naturally, I scooped up some of the seedlings and placed them into containers, in hopes of nurturing them to transplant size. Well, they have grown well, and the tallest is about 10" tall. My question is, can the transplant be put into the ground this fall - or do I need to protect it through the winter months, then plant it next spring? Here's a photo of the largest one....

Thanks, EG
