Perparing Carpinus caroliniana seed for germination

I've collected a tidy sum of this seed with hopes of obtaining some seedlings next spring. Dirr says to collect green about now and stratify for around 6 months. I've tried this before - sowing about mid March in a heated greenhouse and germination was marginal at best - very few. So I'm wondering if anyone has some tips that have proven to be successful? My seed is rather small and I wonder if the green outer coating needs to be removed or at least scuff with maybe some coarse sand paper? I've never tried that before on this seed but have found it works on others.

Any advice or tips appreciated.

Marshall
