Cleft Graft vs. Whip Graft

I am trying to learn to graft. Most of my work will involve tropical trees that do not go dormant.

All of the information I see about tropical trees uses the cleft graft. However, the whip graft seems to be a better graft. Can I just learn the whip graft and use it instead?
