Rooted in water; adding soil?

I tried rooting Hydrangea arborescens in water and in 50/50 potting soil and perlite approximately a month ago. The three in the soil mix didn't make it, but the three in water have roots that are about 3/4 inch long. Now I need to get them in to soil. Has anyone tried adding soil to the rooted cuttings as the water evaporates instead of more water? I think the idea is that the roots will gradually acclimate to soil and the transition will be safer. I would transplant to a drained pot after the glass is mostly full of soil. Any thoughts? Thanks!
