| Hi, I was reading on the Peegee hydrangea thread where someone uses the "layering" method for propagation. Could someone please explain what that means???

| Sure. There are different types of layering, but usually it refers to pinning a branch to the ground so that it grows roots. Once roots develop, the branch can be cut just before the rooted area, and a new plant is produced. Sometimes a notch or slit is cut into the branch at the location where roots are desired to encourage their growth. Another form of layering is sometimes called air layering. This is when roots are developed, through various techniques, on free standing branch. Sometimes a moist rooting medium is placed around the branch. A notch or slit is often made to encourage root growth into the rooting medium. |
