Russian Sage cuttings, what to do this fall?

My russian sage (Perovskia) has been sending out new growth so on an impulse I struck some cuttings this morning. I anticipate a good root base in the next 3-4 weeks, but am wondering if I might be better off growing them under lights all winter, and planting out in the Spring, vs. getting them in the (well prepared) ground and mulching heavily. My preference obviously is for the latter, and I would only not bother if there is no realistic chance of success. Any thoughts?
