root cuttings of Stokes Aster - how to plant?

Mary Leek

Has anyone ever been successful using pieces of roots taken from a plant such as a Stokes Aster plant? Not a rooted piece of green growth, just a piece of plant root found underground.

The roots are fair sized which makes it easy to remove pieces of root. I've read about this method but it didn't explain whether the root should be inserted up and down or lay it lengthwise and how deep to plant it in the rooting medium. It also didn't give any idea how long it might take before new green growth can be expected.
