Dividing Laurels

I am interested in dividing a couple of Skip Laurels that I have to fill in some open spots in a hedge of Laurels. Does anyone know how to do this? There isn't just one woody stem, there are a bunch of stems. Do I just basically cut down the middle of the root structure, pull apart and plant each one separately? Will it survive this? What time of year is the best for this? Can I do it now? There are tons of roots....

Thanks!
