Can't get mint to root in water no matter what I try!

I really hope someone can help me out. I have a mint plant that is very special to me. A friend of mine who moved away give it to me when it was almost completely dead. It was in a tiny pot and only had 1 little green area the size of a quarter. I planted it in a 5 gallon tub filled with potting soil, set in in a spot in my yard where it got indirect sunlight and babied it. It started to grow like crazy and eventually filled out the 5 gallon tub. I moved it in a part of my yard where it got sunlight most of the day. It still did well. I noticed that the stems started getting very long and eventually it started to flower. Then I noticed that all the green between the base of the plant and the extremities started to turn brown and die. there was green at the base...a brown/dead looking stem and then green at the ends. I don't know what to do about that and can't figure out what's causing it. Worried that my plan was about to die, I took cuttings from those green ends. I've placed them in jars with water and placed them in a nice warm spot in my kitchen where they got indirect sunlight hoping that roots would come out but they just start to turn brown after 3-4 days and day without rooting. I've changed the water, not changed the water, tried on top of the fridge, on a northern facing window...everything. No matter what, my cuttings won't root. At the same time, my basil roots just fine, my coleus roots, even mexican petunia is rooting fine in water. Everything I read tells me that I'm doing it right...that's it's so easy even a CAVEMAN could do it. But I keep failing. Does anyone have any suggestions I could try? Thanks!
