Dividing Jackson vine (smilax)

My husband dug up a large Jackson vine (also called Smilax) root ball with two growing vines on it. The root ball is full of tubers. How should we divide it up and get the tubers to sprout? He left long lengths of the growing vines intact and we don't know if we should trim them back or not. I am thinking we should trim the vines back, divide the tubers and replant them in pots with new potting soil until we are ready to transplant them at our new home (still in process). My husband thinks we should just replant the entire root ball in the ground and then redig it up in December. I think this will shock the plant twice. Any suggestions for how we should do this?
