Transplanting or division of creeping phlox

About 3 yrs. ago I bought a pink creeping phlox that has spread to the point of it needing to be divided. My idea is to use my digging fork, dig the whole plant up and then proceed to pull it apart in sections, then replant it. I may an attempt to propagate my one and only emerald blue/purple creeping phlox and it seemed to take all summer long for it. I bought some more pink creeping phlox because there were no emerald blue/purple left at HD, so this Spring, I will be buying nothing but the blue/purple color to add to my flowerbeds.

Does my idea of digging the entire plant up and separating into several plants and replanting make sense?
