I asume you wish to know how to go from the seed to tree you may plant outside so>>>>>> store the seed at 40f for 3 months then scratch the surface (crack the hull)& soak in water for 24 hours changing the water 2-3 times.... then lightly cover the seed soil temp 65-70F taking 14-35 days to germinate grow on in a container(s) the first year. taking care to protect from freezing next winter then set out (2nd spring) water & protect from rabits etc.....

try to find american chestnuts if possible, they're much more flavorful. theres an american chestnut society (easy google search) thats createdd a chestnut thats 15/16 american chestnut and 1/16 chinese chestnut. the 1/16 is for a plague resistance that wiped out the bulk of american chestnuts, I believe, in the 40's.

Chesnuts need a period of cold, moist stratification. Chestnuts and acorns are subject to losing viability pretty rapidly(we're talking days, here) if held at typical room temperature/humidity. There's a strong likelihood that grocery-store chestnuts may already be non-viable.
However, if you're determined to try them, I'd soak some for a day or so(floaters should be discarded), then put them in a ziploc bag containing some damp(not wet!) peat moss and store in the fridge over winter, then plant them next spring - most will have sprouted, if they're viable, quite a while before you'll be frost-free.

i grow chestnut from seeds with no stratification, no hull cracking, absolutely nothing just straight from the grocery store into the slightly moist soil. they grow quite fast during winter in my family room. in the spring i take them outside and acclimatize them for about 2 weeks before i plant them in a sunny location. rabbits are the biggest problem they prune my young chestnut trees every winter and so far i couldn't grow a big tree, those little rascals.

from Yugoslavia when ppl go for a visit. all of them are the same
