prop from root cuttings/woody parts/soil mix questions

I read what I could find on propagating from cuttings of the roots of perennials, but still have questions..

- I didn't find any mention of the type of very large, deep, woody roots I found when I dug up some pink loosestrife. As I read, I looked for pieces that were attached to part of the growing/surface of the plant. It doesn't look as if there's 'life' in them, but I don't want to pitch them if there may be.

- To get these started in containers (I'm moving and want to take them with me), should I use the sand/peat mix as I would for other cuttings, or a soil mix? So far, I've been dusting the roots with some Rootone and using a sand/peat/perlite/MirGro soil mix with a little tri-phosphate. Hope I haven't messed them up!
