Acer rubrum cuttings: Need advice

the_yard_guy

Hello all. I have never tried to propagate trees from cuttings so can use some advice.

A friend has a beautiful Acer rubrum (red maple) and has invited me to take a few cuttings. My questions are:

1. Is now (October) a good time to take cuttings or should I wait until June/July next year?

2. I've hard some people bundle cuttings together in the fall and then bury them outdoors for the winter. Does this actually work?

3. If I take them now, would the cuttings have to go through a dormancy period to simulate fall/winter before putting out new leaves?

Sorry for the basic questions. Just trying to get a feel for what's involved.

Thanks

TYG
