Timing for Ivy (Hedera helix) cuttings (and how many)

Posted by simcan z5/Toronto (My Page) on

I would like to make numerous ivy plants to plant at the base of a new retaining wall, about 170 feet all told. There is a well established plant alongside the wall of the house.

I would like to take many cuttings from this plant, root them and plant them. Can I do this now, rooting over the winter, and planting in spring?

I started about 30 cuttings in a clear tote propagation chamber on October 22, 2009, and all of them have two or three half inch roots already. I have the prop chamber on a table in my enclosed breezeway that has windows on the east and west sides and gets lots of light. Now I have to find a pot to put them in!

I think that the Maryland Plant Protection people were considering including Hedrix helix as a 'noxious weed'.

Several progressive nurseries in the Washington D.C. suburbs would not carry it for that reason.
