Propagating gro-lo sumac

I am interesting in making five or six plants, and my parents have a huge patch. I sppose I could simply take some big divisions next spring but I am wondering if anyone has experience propagating via root cuttings.

If so, would taking 4 or 5 inch fleshy root cuttings (now or in the next month), burying in moist sand/peat and sticking in the fridge for a couple of months, and then to a coolish basement, likely produce?

cold treatment not required just put in pots with soil...
root cuttings taken inwinter take 40-80 days to produce plants
