Root cuttings from Romneya

I'd lke to take some root cuttings from my Romneya and would like to know if they should be placed vertically or horizontally in the rooting medium and if they should be placed outdoors (I'm in zone 8) or placed in a cool greenhouse? Is this the right time to do it or should I wait a bit longer? Thanks for any help you can provide.
