Has anyone had any luck with rooting cuttings of Cananga odorata. If so, how and when did you do it. Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

| Cananga odorata is a common plant here in Miami. It is almost always propagated from fresh seed. The seed is viable for 30 to 60 days. In Thialand they do propagate some very special clones by air layering the branches. I have not heard of anyone rooting cuttings though |

I received these ylang ylang cuttings from Florida on February 19th of this year (Thanks Kathy!). I immediately potted them up. As of right now they seem to be doing pretty well. The ylang ylang cuttings really like the extra humidity from the plastic wrapped around it. I used fir bark, regular soil and some perlite. I also added some turface on the top. So far I am happy with the results. -Bo |

| Bo - a suggestion is to reduce the no. of leaves of this plant. They don't have a root system and leaves tend to need more water, so the plant would benefit from a reduction of leaves. Also make sure your plastic 'breaths' by cutting holes into it. They do like high humidity I agree. Normally you would also lightly scrape off the bark from the bottom to allow the plant to root faster. I agree with kewgarden, in the tropics the best form of propagation is to layer it or to aerate it. Ianna |

Ianna - Thanks! I will reduce the amount of leaves and poke holes in the plastic. 'Normally you would also lightly scrape off the bark from the bottom to allow the plant to root faster.' <--- Can you elaborate on this? Scrape off the bark from what bottom? I am a bit confused... -Bo |
