gifting bare roots

I have been dividing many native prairie plants in my garden this fall, and I thought I might gift a few as Christmas presents. Does anyone have advice/experience in gifting plant material for Christmas? I am in a northern clime (zone 5) and the ground is currently thawed in the afternoon. It may be frozen solid by Christmas where I am and where the gift recipients are.

You will wish to transplant the division asap. Therefor I give a home madde "gift Certificate" describing the plants & promise to dig, deliver & help plant in the early spring.
