propagating dumb cane?

hi. great forum here! i've had a dumb cane or dieffenbachia in my family for over 45 years that my mom always use to cut down and make new plants from. i tried cutting mine down, made about eight 4 inch cuttings from the cane part and put them in water. is this the right way to do it? a lady at some store told me to put some of this root helper liquid on the bottom of the cuttings which i did. i'm worried i've messed this up. it was about a week ago. no roots yet, i'm sure it takes more time. but the roots are now in a vase. should they be in the dark or do they need light? any suggestions on what i can do now? i'm hoping they don't die on me as this plant has been in my family for decades. thanks for any help!
