Avocado Problem

I am growing an Avocado, and my plant is about 4 months old. Everything was going well, and the plant sprouted 4 large leaves, but after about 2 weeks, they began to dry up at the tips, and ultimately fell off. The plant seemed to go dormant for about 3 weeks or so, then sprouted for new leaves, these much smaller, and they also are already turning dark, dry green, and seem to be dying. I have been careful not to over water - what's going on? The stalk seems so health, but the leaves won't keep.
