air layering maples

I would like to try to do some air-layering of a sugar maple that my neighbor has, it's seed-grown but has some amazing fall color, more red than most around here.

Questions:

1. What is the best time of year?
2. Hardwood or softwood? How thick of a branch can you go for?
3. Should we pick an excessively vigorous branch, a twiggy, slower-growing one, or something in between?
4. Any tips and tricks?
5. Rooting powder-yes or no?
6. Once rooted, should you cut off the "stub" of stripped branch below the newly-formed root collar as close as possible, or just let it rot away?

hey joe...

grafting season starts just after new year ...

you might want to call around .. and find someone who will do the grafting ...

you would send off 3 to 5 pieces.. and come fall.. they would send you back whatever you agree on ...

might cost you $50 ... but if its worth it.. its worth it ...

the guys in the tree forum.. might be able to list grafters ... e.g. the place at the link offers a cultivar .. so one might presume they have understock .. or at least did at one time ... call and ask for jeff ... he's the head cut and bandage guy ... lol
