Hardwood cuttings storage question

Hi, I'm fairly new to hardwood cuttings and would like run an idea by some of you more seasoned propagators.

I have read than in my zone 5, the best place to store hardwood cuttings is in a sand-filled box 1 foot under ground. But I've also heard of people planting them directly in pot, covering with plastic and placing the pot outside against the north side of the house. So I'm wondering if burying the cuttings is REALLY necessary.

Here's what I'd rather do if it will work: envelope the cuttings in moist sand or sawdust inside one of those plastic storage boxes with a lid and store in my unheated barn.

Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance! Farmeranne
