potted sapling overwinter

Ok, question for y'all. Have a golden chain tree sapling I started growing this spring and hope to plant it next spring. It's about a foot and a half high now and is in a cheap plastic pot for now. Now winter has come and it can get kind of rough in Michigan. I'm worried that the winter weather will freeze the roots and kill it since it's not in the proper ground. Would it be ok to leave it out on the porch overwinter, or should i protect it somehow? I have a covered porch we keep heated just enough so the pipes of the washing machine there wont freeze. But will it be sufficiently toughened that way, and should I still water it or anything?

The covered porch with enough heat to protect the pipes should be ok. Soil should not be dry nor saturated. Al

I'd be more inclined to heel the tree (pot and all) into the ground or in a temporary mulch berm. The barely heated covered porch may work, as long as temperatures stay low enough and you are able to maintain proper moisture levels. Heeling the plant in reduces maintenance and may increase chances for success.

thats a good idea brandon7. might be tricky though since there is now snow on the ground and my mulch pile is frozen. wish i had thought to ask this earlier. but then i really dont have a place in my yard where I could heel the pot. i just hope I can maintain the proper level of moisture.
