Question about Grafting. I'm new to it.

I am a first-time grafter, never done it before, so I have a few questions that i hope somebody can answer. =]

1. Is a cleft graft the best graft for beginners? Is it the most reliable/successful? Or are there more successful graft techniques?

2. People say you need to graft plants of a similar type. Can somebody tell me if the type of plant needs to be within order,family, genus, species, etc?

3. Lastly, does my scion need to have a bud on it? What happens if i put on a scion with leaves still on it?

To answer your questions, it would help if you specified what it is you wish to graft. Al

HERE'S ONE PERSON'S OPINION:
1. Cleft graft should be a good starting point.
2. Plants should be similar: for example, almost any type camellia will graft onto another camellia, most any type of citrus would graft onto any other citrus. What did you have in mind?
3. The scion will probably do better if it has as terminal bud at the top, however, if it has leaves still on it, there's a pretty good chance it will have a dormant bud beside the leaf that can become active.
