not all historical gardens are formal gardens

Not much of a Historical garden hunter but a life long gardener. During the years I have traveled and lived all over the U.S and even 8 years in Europe. I have seen many historical buildings, gardens. and locations, but now live in an area which in history was coal country.

In this area the home garden and home canning were an everyday part of life. Historically you may not see a large formal gardens around the area but a walk through local towns will show what is grown and in most cases what has always been grown in the area.

Cold winter temperatures and other climate factors dictate the varieties to be grown. The high density of older citizens who still live as they have since 1920s or 30s, results in an area where change is slow, and the old ways remain so much so that seldom will you see a yard that is not maintained and manicured as well as any historical garden with a gardening crew. A walk through the local woods often will reveal an old foundation and signs of where and what was grown either as decoration or for food.

Some spring or summer day take yourself out for a drive out of the cities and head for the mountains/country and experience a different type and style of gardening.
