Garden Resoration

I'm not sure whether this is "restoration" or not. I grow irises and have too small a lot to do much gardening, and my son-in-law, who has two acres and hates to mow has let me have all I want. Trouble is, the developer used the poorest fill he could find, and I constantly roto-till up rocks 6 inches across. When I plant a rhizome, I'm often pushing a small rock against the rhizome instead of earth. This last fall I bought a 10 yard load of mushroom compost and am placing a 3 inch thick layer and roto-tilling it in before planting my irises. I sure hope it does some good. I quit in late October hoping to get growth before winter, but I have noticed heaving of rhizomes in my last four rows.
