| I'm not sure whether this is "restoration" or not. I grow irises and have too small a lot to do much gardening, and my son-in-law, who has two acres and hates to mow has let me have all I want. Trouble is, the developer used the poorest fill he could find, and I constantly roto-till up rocks 6 inches across. When I plant a rhizome, I'm often pushing a small rock against the rhizome instead of earth. This last fall I bought a 10 yard load of mushroom compost and am placing a 3 inch thick layer and roto-tilling it in before planting my irises. I sure hope it does some good. I quit in late October hoping to get growth before winter, but I have noticed heaving of rhizomes in my last four rows. |

| How much of the 2 acres are you planting out? When you say you quit in October, what do you mean? That you quit spreading compost on those last four rows? Could you define your questions a bit more? You are renovating the soil on a two acre field--what a job! I see from your home page that you are an iris expert. What do you do with all the iris? Cut flowers, mail order, hybridize?? Ginger |
