Pool has gone, landscaping suggestions needed

We have just filled in our pool. It was in our front garden facing west. We live in S/E Queensland, have a brick home with a wooden pergola attached to the front of the house which is being retained. We thought we would also retain the brown clay pavers extending them about 3/4 metre out. My first thought was to have gardens around the 3 other sides of our 1 1/3 mt brick pier and timber fence and maybe a freeform garden in the centre of the area with lawn on the rest, but this seems very ordinary & would like to come up with a better design. The area between the pavers and the fencing is 12mx6m. We live in a sub-tropical area and have sandy soil, the area is in full sun. We have a few existing shrubs, hibiscus, geisha girl. ixora and golden cane, but am not concerned if we do not keep them, they are presently planted against fencing. Any suggestions on design would be greatly appreciated.
