Rethinking a rigid rectangular plot

KGates

Hello all. I posted this also on landscape design for some feedback. Three years ago moved into a house that had once been cared for by some older English lady who actually really gardened and had roses and everything, but then the place was lived in by a succession of rental tenants who didn't give a hoot.

I'm trying to restore or rethink this thing and would love some recommendations on how to solve the problems of eyesores, privacy and the rigidity of the plot.

I'd like to grow some veggies among the flowers and shrubs. Thus my colonnade idea (see page two) but I think it's too rigid again.

Thank you all.
