Research is now showing that certain soil organisms live in certain layers in the soil and that to mix them up by tilling disturbs the soil fertility as well as the soil structure. Some are suggesting that whenever possible, we NOT disturb the soil. Using this model, you could lay down some thick layers of newspaper to discourage grass/weeds from growing where you don't want them, wet the paper, layer on some compost, grass clippings, rich topsoil, manure--whatever is needed in your area to enrich and improve the soil, but definitely a good quality compost to add the needed soil micro-organisms. Earth worms and other soil organisms will loosen the soil. Wait a few weeks, then dig your holes and plant your shrubs and trees, mulch out to the dripline of the trees and shrubs, plant your grass seed.

The alternative is the traditional method of tilling the soil amendments into the compacted soil, loosening and aerating at the same time. This has worked well forever so is also a good method of soil preparation.

If there is weedcloth under the soil, it is probably best to remove it, especially since it has soil on top which is defeating its purpose. Old weedcloth just makes planting difficult(you have to cut holes in it) and its permeability is compromised as it ages(tiny holes become clogged with sandy bits of stone, hard clay). It can actually prevent water from getting into the soil.

Check with your neighbors, county extension agent, or someone from the forums who is familiar with Georgia clay to see what amendments are best for your soil. Maybe you won't need much of anything. A soil test is a good place to start if you truly want to know what is needed/recommended.

only juniper is in the hillside. This is a new house for me, my first house actually. I want to fill the backyard with ornamental tree's and flowering bushes.
