1840 federal farmhouse.

I posted this somewhere else before I found this more appropiate forum. I live on a little less than half acre of a wooded lot..actually three lots in a small town with a busy road out front. I have a backyard wildlife sanctuary-- number 7000 and have a rather interesting yard. Most of the layout was done in the 1920's when this farm was turned into a residential propery and the other 8 acres were sold. I have lots of trees and two ponds..the recent one just built to accomodate my three gigantic koi. Question: What is the proper look for the front of this clapboard house? Presently it has gigantic yews and boxwoods which are 80 years old. I hate to cut them down as this is a sound barrier as well as visial one to prevent people on the sidewalk from looking in the house. And birds roost in there and eat the berries. If I'd get the nerve..what would be appropiate?
